Paint 3D does not come preinstalled on Windows 11, and Microsoft removed it from the Microsoft Store on November 4, 2024. The app itself still runs perfectly on Windows 11 once it is installed. Below are the methods that work today, from the quickest to the most technical. Once installed, head to our beginner guide to using Paint 3D.

Three ways to install Paint 3D on Windows 11: run the downloaded installer, reinstall from the Microsoft Store library, or re-register the app with a PowerShell command

Check if Paint 3D is already installed

Press the Windows key, type Paint 3D, and look for the app in the results. You can also open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for it. If it is listed but will not open, skip to our Paint 3D troubleshooting guide.

Method 1: Download the installer

  1. Go to the Paint 3D download section on our homepage.
  2. Click Download Paint 3D and save the file.
  3. Open the downloaded file and follow the prompts to install.
  4. Launch Paint 3D from the Start menu.

Method 2: Reinstall from your Microsoft Store library

If Paint 3D was ever installed with your Microsoft account, it may still appear in your Store library even though new users can no longer find it by searching.

  1. Open the Microsoft Store app and sign in with the account you used before.
  2. Click Library in the bottom-left corner.
  3. Find Paint 3D in the list and click Get or the download icon.

Method 3: Re-register Paint 3D with PowerShell

If Paint 3D is still on your PC but missing from the Start menu (common after a Windows update), re-registering the app package usually brings it back. Paint 3D’s package name is Microsoft.MSPaint.

  1. Right-click the Start button and choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  2. Paste this command and press Enter:
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers *Microsoft.MSPaint* | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Note: this only works if the Paint 3D files are still on your PC. If the command returns nothing, use Method 1 or 2 instead.

Before you install

Paint 3D needs very little to run: Windows 10 version 1703 or later, or Windows 11, with about 2 GB of RAM and a DirectX 9 graphics card. Almost any PC from the last several years qualifies. See the full Paint 3D system requirements for recommended specs.
