How to Convert 2D to 3D in Paint 3D
Turning 2D artwork into 3D is one of Paint 3D’s signature tricks. Depending on what you start with, you can trace a drawing with 3D doodle, convert a flat shape or sticker with Make 3D, or cut a subject out of a photo and give it depth. Once your object is 3D, you can edit it like any of the Paint 3D models.
Method 1: Trace a drawing with 3D doodle
- Open your drawing, or sketch one with the Pencil or Marker brush.
- Click 3D shapes and choose Sharp edge or Soft edge under 3D doodle.
- Click around the outline of your drawing and return to the starting point to close the shape.
- Paint 3D inflates the outline into a 3D object. Rotate it to check its depth.
| 3D doodle type | Result | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Sharp edge | Flat, extruded shape with crisp sides | Letters, logos, cookie-cutter shapes |
| Soft edge | Rounded, puffy shape | Clouds, animals, organic forms |
Method 2: Use Make 3D on shapes and stickers
- Add a 2D shape from the 2D shapes tab, or a sticker from the Stickers tab.
- While it is still selected, click Make 3D in the side panel.
- The shape becomes a flat 3D object you can tilt and position in depth.
Method 3: Turn a photo subject into 3D
- Cut the subject out with Magic Select.
- With the cutout selected, click Make 3D.
- Or trace the cutout’s outline with a soft-edge 3D doodle and apply the photo as a sticker for a fuller 3D effect.
Tip: 3D doodle creates true depth, while Make 3D produces a flat panel in 3D space. For a real 3D object, start with 3D doodle.
FAQ
Can Paint 3D convert an image to 3D automatically?
Not fully. Make 3D places an image in 3D space, but true depth comes from tracing it with 3D doodle.
Can I 3D print a shape made with 3D doodle?
Yes. Export it as 3MF or STL via Menu > Save as > 3D model. See exporting Paint 3D models.
