Paint 3D Magic Select

What Magic Select does, every option in its panel, and how to get clean edges every time.

Magic Select is Paint 3D’s automatic cutout tool. You roughly frame a person, animal, or object in a photo, and it detects the subject’s edges for you, lifts it off the image as a separate object, and can even fill in the background behind it. It is the reason many people still install Paint 3D. For a full walkthrough with export steps, see our background removal tutorial.

How Magic Select works

  1. Frame: after clicking Magic select, you drag a box close around the subject. Tighter framing gives better results.
  2. Detect: when you click Next, Paint 3D analyses color and contrast to find the subject’s outline.
  3. Refine: you correct the result with the Add and Remove brushes.
  4. Extract: clicking Done turns the subject into a movable object on the canvas.

Magic Select options

OptionWhat it does
AddPaint over parts of the subject that were missed.
RemovePaint over background that was included by mistake.
Autofill backgroundFills the hole left behind with surrounding colors, so the original scene still looks complete.
Make 3DAfter extraction, turns the cutout into a 3D sticker you can tilt and rotate.

What you can do with Magic Select

  • Remove photo backgrounds and save transparent PNGs.
  • Move a person or object into a different photo.
  • Create custom stickers you can wrap around 3D models.
  • Delete unwanted objects and let Autofill patch the gap.

Tips for cleaner edges

  • Choose photos where the subject contrasts strongly with the background.
  • Zoom in with the slider in the bottom-right corner before refining fine details.
  • Use small, careful strokes with Add and Remove rather than large sweeps.
  • Hair and fur are the hardest; expect to refine those areas by hand.

Magic Select greyed out? It needs an image on the canvas and works in the regular 2D view. Open a photo first, and exit 3D view if it is active. Still stuck? Try the fixes in our troubleshooting guide.
